Kristin Simpson

Kristin was a co-founder and staff member at another Sudbury school, The Beach School.   Kristin has an M.A. in English and a B.Ed., from the University of Toronto. She is also the mother of a young daughter. She enjoys writing and yoga.

 

Tane Akamatsu

Tane is a school psychologist, with a Ph.D. in educational psychology.  She has been a Sudbury school parent and staff member.  Her interest in alternative schooling was sparked by both her family's experience and her professional work.

 

Rika Alvo

Rika is a long-time Sudbury parent. Her interest in non-coercive education began through her work as a La Leche League Leader. Singing harmony, cooking and reading are other pursuits.

 

Sarah Alvo

Sarah attended a Sudbury school for 4 years.  She was active in the school’s operations, including chairing the School Meeting (effectively being CEO of the school) and chairing the Judicial Committee (enforcing the school's behaviour rules). Sarah enjoys philosophy, psychology, photography, math and gender studies.

  

Carlo Ricci

Carlo is a child advocate.  As a professor of education at Nipissing University, he is the founding editor of the Journal of Unschooling and Alternative Learning.  He supports his daughters' educational choices, which you can read about in his upcoming book.  He is also co-editor of the book Turning Points: 35 Visionaries in Education Tell Their Stories.

 

Ben Robins

Ben's interests include the social sciences, poetry, and people. He has a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Waterloo, and a B.Ed. from Queen's University.

 

Heather Morrison

Heather would like to send her 2 boys to Reach.  She organizes play dates with other interested families.  Heather is a homeopath.

 

Teresa Costes

Teresa Costes has her BFA in Film (screenwriting) from York University.  She is a firm believer in freedom for children and would love to see more children given the opportunity to take control of their own lives.  Her greatest teachers in life are her two daughters, ages 15 and 7.  In her spare time she enjoys acting, hiking, studying philosophy, and baking.

 

Viola Huang

Viola has visited a number of Sudbury schools and other democratic schools.  She is interested in history, philosophy, piano, travel and the outdoors.  Viola has been accepted to do graduate work at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she will study the history of democratic education.

 

Amelie Delage

Amélie is doing her Ph.D. in political science at York University, Toronto. She studies the relationship between childhood and political institutions, and more specifically how democratic parenting and schooling can contribute to the democratization of our political culture. She enjoys, among other things, cooking, art crafts, gardening and outdoor activities with her partner and 3 sons.  She hopes to offer her sons the option of  democratic schooling.
